Overview

How flying works here

National body: Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Luchtvaart (KNVvL), Afdeling Paragliding (opens in a new tab)

Visiting pilots

  • Visiting pilots with an IPPI 3 equivalent licence may launch at the dune soaring sites; KNVvL strongly recommends lessons if you lack strong-wind experience.
  • Winch towing is the main launch method. Without an equivalent licence plus IPPI 3, you launch under an instructor at a KNVvL-authorised school.

A short summary, not legal advice. Rules change, so check the current requirements with Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Luchtvaart (KNVvL), Afdeling Paragliding before you fly. Summary checked 13 Oct 2026.

Learning to fly

  • Under Dutch government rules, paragliding needs the Paragliding Pilot Licence (PgPL), issued by KNVvL.
  • You learn at schools recognised by KNVvL; PgPL-1 needs at least 15 flights and does not allow solo flying.
  • PgPL-2 (independent flying near the launch) needs at least 40 flights signed off by a school, a national theory exam and KNVvL membership.
